walls. no one is hurt, but egyptian police are noticeably slow to arrive. around 10:00 p.m. in libya, militants attack the u.s. consulate in benghazi. they set the consulate on fire. over the next five hours until nearly dawn, u.s. and libyan security personnel inside the consulate battle the militants building to building. four americans, including the consulate, were killed. today, the libyan government, which has close relations with the united states, apologized. and there was a pro-american demonstration in benghazi. but elsewhere in the region, there were anti-american demonstrations.

in afghanistan, the government blocked access to youtube. and in egypt, where it all began, the protest in front of the u.s. embassy. richard engle, nbc news, cairo. >> here at home, dozens gathered outside the white house to denounce the violence in libya. live in d.c. with the calls for justice. jackie? >> reporter: this was organized through social media by libyans with one foot here in the d.c. area and the other thousands of miles away. >> reporter: the young man who organized the vigil in front of the white house for am bas dar chris stevens is a graduate of jeb stuart high school and took a year off to become a freedom fighter in libya. >> he was really enthusiastic about being there. and he was also excited about libyan americans coming and helping. i remember him specifically telling us, the few libyan

americans that were there, that he's very proud as an american that we're here as americans helping out this revolution. >> reporter: among those who spoke, a university of maryland student who met ambassador stevens in libya. >> translator: we really want to live amongst the libyan people. he would go out. he would explore. he would -- he really would -- i felt like he considered libya his home. >> reporter: most of those who lit candles in memory said they had never met ambassador stevens. but they appreciated his obvious love for his job and for libya. >> he's part of us. he's part of our family. he really cares for this country and to see something like this happen to him and what his family is going through, this is the least we could do, just come out here and be in solidarity. >> reporter: and obviously, there is great interest for any plan for a memorial service.

>> right now, the search is on for a man who opened fire at morgan state university. the victim was shot inside the campus student center. police say he was not a student, but the attack is raising some serious questions about safety at the school. shamari stone is in baltimore with the latest on the investigation. >> the university center is the hub here at morgan state. tonight, a shooting inside here has a lot of students concerned. >> i don't feel safe. >> khron is a freshman in baltimore after a gunman shot a man on cam pugs. >> reporter: it was anxious moments inside the university student center. khyron was eating when a man walked in the building, shot the man in the stomach and walked away. >> i seen a guy come out of the bathroom bleeding and he just fell on the ground. >> reporter: police put the

campus on laockdown. >> i was scared for a second and then i was like, well, you know, at least they're safe now. >> reporter: tonight, students question security risks of an open campus. i talked to the university spokesperson about their concerns. >> we invite and encourage the community to come and partake in what the university has to offer. >> reporter: you see that camera right there? it might have captured the shooter coming out of the building right here. this is the doorway. police will review that camera up there and all throughout the campus in hopes of catching the shooter. >> two prince george's county high school students have been murdered. within three weeks' time, both were models. both cases remain unsolved. last month, amber stanley was shot and killed inside her own
